The city of Houston commonly known for its nonexistent zoning laws and sprawling concrete roadways has begun to make the leap into providing adequate bicycle infrastructure for downtown Houston cyclists. Over the course of the past weekend, construction crews begin the installment of a two-way bike lane on Lamar Street.

The dedicated bike lane on the Lamar Street features traffic signals in both directions, small barriers to alert automobiles of possible encroachment, and is outlined in white paint. The Houston bike lane is also painted a light green to alert onlookers in vehicles and pedestrians that the lane is reserved for Houston bicyclists.

The scheduled completion for the new bicycle infrastructure item is March 8, 2015.

Local bicycle organizations, Bike Houston and B-Cycle, and Houston bicycling enthusiasts are happy to see new developments that will safely allow cyclist to cross between Houston’s various bicycle trail systems. The dedicated bike lane seeks to connect the Buffalo Bayou, Columbia Tap, and Brays Bayou area trails.
